Strengthening your work at sentence level

Line and Copyediting

Line and copyediting

A copyedit means reviewing sentences for consistency, accuracy, readability and flow, whilst picking up errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar.

It will make everything in the text make sense.

Copyediting is also known as line or sentence-level editing.

A copyedit will polish your work and help prepare your manuscript for  self-publishing or submission.

If you’ve revised your work several times already you’re unlikely to see your own errors so a clean-sweep copyedit is essential.

So hand your work over to someone who’s impartial who can spot not just errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar but where a sentence is ambiguous or not working.

I use MS Word track changes, highlighting and comment tools to improve and polish your work.

It’s also important to say that any copyediting edits are suggestions only. If you don’t like a sentence re-work you don’t have to accept it. You are the author and this is your work.

I’m always sensitive to an author’s intentions of their manuscript. Rest assured, I never recommend anything if I’m not sure of your intentions, and if I’m not sure I’ll talk to you about it, respecting you as the author.

If you’d like to discuss copyediting and the costs involved, please get in touch.

How it works

1.

The first step is to discuss your work. I'll ask you to send me a sample chapters so I get a flavour of the story I'll be working on.

2.

We’ll talk about the cost of copyediting and a timeline.

3.

If you decide to go-ahead, you’ll sign a contract and pay 50% of the fee upfront as a non-refundable deposit.

4.

Upon completion of the work the remainder of the fee is paid.

Testimonials
Manuscript evaluation

Upmarket Fiction author (prefers not to be named)

“I have greatly valued Greer’s assessment of the manuscript of my third novel. Inevitably, by the time I had reached a seventh draft I was quite unable to take an objective view of the strengths and weaknesses of the narrative. Greer is the third editor with whom I have worked and she has, unquestionably, been the most helpful. Her systematic analysis of theme, plot, structure, characterisation, viewpoint etc has been invaluable and the accompanying manuscript tracker is making it much more straightforward to proceed with an eighth draft! The story touches some areas which are particularly difficult for me. I discussed these with Greer at the outset and have been impressed by the sensitive way in which she has handled them.”

“I was very impressed with Greer’s edits to my manuscript. Clear reasons were given against each edit offered, leading to an education in honing my writing craft whilst also highlighting my unhelpful habits. Greer delivered the edited document within the estimated timeframes and communications with her were always friendly and informative. I would certainly utilise Greer’s valuable services again.”

Greer’s work was excellent – she was able to produce a clear copyedited file very quickly indeed – alongside a useful editorial style sheet. All deadlines were exceeded and communication was very easy. This enabled us to complete the work on the book much more efficiently and also helped with the design process too. Greer provided proofreading edits in a very clear way, which was also helpful. We would, undoubtedly, have struggled to produce the quality of booklet that we ended up with had we not commissioned Greer. We would recommend her services for any similar type of work.
